Pieces in place for Wahoo to make run at Championship (2024)

WAHOO — In 2023, the Wahoo football team surprised many with their run to the Class C-1 State Championship game and their 12-1 record. This year, the Warriors won’t be flying under the radar as they come into the season as the top team in C-1.

Even with the success from last year, Wahoo doesn’t want to take anything for granted this season. They know they will have many tests throughout the year, including a four-week stretch where they play Ashland-Greenwood, Aurora, Omaha Gross, and DC West. In every game, they will have to be ready to play, because everybody is going to give them their best shot.

“There are obviously lots of pieces and parts of last year’s team that are coming back, but one thing we have tried to reiterate with the kids and really stress is that was last year’s team, and this is this year’s team,” Wahoo Head Coach Chad Fox said. “We can’t assume just because last year we made it to the state finals that will be in the cards for us this year. I tried to stress and make sure that they understood that we’re not going to take any of that for granted. Any successes that this year’s team has is going to have to be earned, and I think the kids are in tune with that.”

A huge source of strength for this Warrior team comes on their line on both sides of the football. They will be anchored by Jake Scanlon and Eli Emerson, who, pound for pound, could be one of the deadliest linemen duos in the state.

Couple that with the return of Noah Bordovsky who was a 1,000-yard rusher and Jase Kaminski, who was a 1,000-yard passer, and Wahoo could have an electric offense this season.

“Offensive line wise we have Jake Scanlon, Landon Brigham, Eli Emerson, and Luke Specht who all played a bunch last year,” Chad Fox said. “Three of those guys were starters for us last year and one rotated for us. ... I feel having three of our five offensive line guys that know what’s going on is really important for some continuity upfront. Our line is not too bad, but we got to find a couple of spots.”

Defensively the Warriors were one of the best groups in the state, giving up only 70 points in 13 games. From that squad, they return Braylon Iversen who led the team in tackles with 117, and Caden Smart who was second on the team with 91 tackles.

Look for Wahoo to be tough on defense again as they try to spark their offense with big turnovers and good field position.

“I mean defensively we return a lot of players out of the front seven, which is a huge strength for us,” Chad Fox said. “Our linebacking core is solid with Caden Smart, Braylon Iverson and Harrison Krueger. They are guys who have lots of experience from last season. Their experiences are going to be vital to our success.”

The positions that the Warriors must build some depth going into 2024 include the receiver core on offense and the cornerback and safety crew on defense. They do have Eli Shada back who got some playing time at tight end last year, but they will look to some seniors and juniors to fill in the holes of Sam and Josh Edmonds and Barrett Lavaley who all graduated.

“The glaring thing on offense is we don’t return a lot of our receivers that we had last year,” Chad Fox said. “I mean both Josh and Sam Edmonds graduated, and Barrett Lavaley graduated. Those were our top receivers, but the guys that we are bringing in are very well-suited to step up and make plays for us. Sam Marxsen, Landon Fye, Caden Smart, Josh Fox and Eli Shada are going to be guys that are going to play and should contribute to our passing game.”

To be one of the top teams in C-1 this year, Chad Fox believes the chemistry with this group will have to take shape. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you are not on the same page, it’s hard to win games on the football field.

It’s also one of those skills that coaches can’t teach. Players must work on the connection and make it a priority to work together and not against each other.

“The one thing that I think is often not discussed or talked about as much is chemistry and leadership,” Fox said. “That is something that has to be fostered this season and has to grow as the season goes. There’s not a lot the coaches can do to manifest that. You talk to the kids, and you hope that those things are going to happen. They have to click, they have to mesh, and they have to work together for a common goal. If all those intangible things that often don’t get talked about come to fruition for us, then I think we’re in line to have a special season.”

Wahoo opens the regular season at Nebraska City at 7 p.m. on Aug. 30. Last year the Warriors defeated the Pioneers 63-0.

FAQs

How fast should you troll for wahoo? ›

Relying on speed to catch prey, rather than stealth, wahoo can be caught on lures trolled at more than 15 knots at times, although most anglers prefer to troll between 4 and 6 knots when towing minnows and 6 to 9 knots when using skirted lures and bibless minnows.

How many pounds of drag for wahoo? ›

Wahoo have hard mouths, and because of this, we can keep the drag tight on the bite to ensure a solid hookup, so 15 to 20 pounds of drag on the bite will really set the hook in the jaw nicely. Wahoo are masters of shaking out hooks if they can create any slack in the line, so you've got to keep them tight.

What is the best live bait for wahoo? ›

In my opinion the absolute best live baits for wahoo fishing are speedos and goggle eyes that are set deep in the water column using an electric reel as downrigger.

What is the best depth to catch wahoo? ›

Even though most wahoo fishermen I know will say that most of their catches come in water 150-300 feet, it is not uncommon to be in waters well beyond 1,000 feet deep and find floating debris and weed lines loaded with bait, schoolie dolphin and other life. Lurking below will be packs of wahoo.

What pound line for wahoo? ›

Add the trolling sinker and 30 to 50 feet of 300- to 400-pound mono shock leader, followed by a snap swivel and the main leader and lure. For the main leader, 480-pound cable is the most popular, but some anglers scale down to 270-pound cable with smaller lures.

How fast is a wahoo at full speed? ›

Wahoo are more than capable of crushing lures being trolled at high speeds. While these fish typically weigh only 25 pounds, they grow to well over 50 pounds. The explosive bite and scorching runs make them formidable sport fish. Their impressive length is what gives them their speed, topping out at 48 MPH.

What is the best line for high speed trolling? ›

Braided lines provide minimal stretch and less resistance when trolling at high speeds. For high speeding we recommend hi-vis 100lb braid without a mono topshot.

How far offshore do you have to go to catch wahoo? ›

These wahoo make their way into the northeastern Gulf of Mexico in late spring and hang around until well after the summer has ended. We are spoiled by our fishery here as there have been fish caught less than a mile offshore, but the majority of the fish are typically caught in the 15-to-30 mile range.

How much drag is enough? ›

Most good anglers and pro shops will recommend setting your drag to about 20 to 30 percent of the pound test you are using.

What color lure is best for wahoo? ›

The Best Wahoo Lure Color for Green Water

After the moss green, next in line are florescent colored lures (Pinks) and UV-colored/coated baits. My favorite wahoo lure colors are: Blue/white. Pink.

What are predators of wahoo? ›

Adult wahoo are only eaten by the largest open ocean predators, like pelagic sharks and billfishes. Individuals of this species are typically solitary or occur in only small groups.

What tide is best for wahoo fishing? ›

The outgoing tide is typically your best bet at getting a bite with the 3-4 days on the front and back of a full moon or new moon being the peak days to fish for wahoo. October through March are the best times of year to target wahoo and the reason is because of the cool surface temperatures that time of year.

What is the best time of day to catch wahoo? ›

Low light early morning hours or sunset are typically the best times to fish for wahoo because the cumulus clouds cast grey, black, and silver shadows across the sea surface, which can help to break up the bright shades of blue and make it easier for wahoo to spot their prey.

What is the biggest wahoo ever caught? ›

Sara took the rod, and after a grueling 45-minute battle, they hauled in an extraordinary 83.46-kilogram (184-pound) wahoo.

How long do wahoo fish live? ›

Atlantic wahoo grow fast, up to 8 feet and 158 pounds, though they are commonly between 3.3 and 5.4 feet long. They have a short life span, up to 5 or 6 years. They are able to reproduce at about 1 year old.

What speed should you troll at? ›

Trolling motors calibrate speed more accurately than large outboard motors. Trolling plates are also used with larger motors to slow the boat to the desired speed. In general, trolling speeds between 1.5 and 2.5 mph, as measured by GPS, are a good starting place for most species like walleye, trout and salmon.

What speed should I troll for bluefin? ›

Speed is Key. Another major difference between trolling inshore and trolling in the canyons is that under no circ*mstances should you be dragging lures at 6 to 8 knots like you would in deeper water. Trolling for big bluefin tuna should be done at 4.5 to 5 knots.

How fast should you troll spinners? ›

Structure fishing with spinners is a “speed sensitive” presentation. Savvy walleye anglers fish these rigs by trolling just fast enough to get the blade rotating on the harness. A trolling speed of 1.2 to 1.5 MPH is about perfect for structure trolling with Hammer Time Walleye Spinners.

What is the best trolling speed for largemouth bass? ›

While trolling for bass is illegal in professional circles, it's effective for amateurs. The ideal trolling speed is two to four miles per hour if you're fishing with crankbaits and similar lures. There isn't a perfect speed, but less than five miles per hour is a good place to start.
