Business Today Bigler-Ketchum Eyes Risky World By JACK MARKOWITZ Post-Gazette Business Editor Chan Ketchum wishes hospitals would have the courage to bill patients $3 to $5 per bed per day for the current cost of nothing but the pain of carrying malpractice insurance. Hal Biknows manufacturer, whose goods don't really kill and maim, whose liability insurance premiums on $3 million annual sales have zoomed from $20,000 to $50,000 in the past three years. "It's not a buyer's market anymore," says Chandler G. Ketchum, chairman of Bigler-Ketchum Inc. "It's a seller's market: Insurance has come through three straight years of losses: I mean property and casualty, of course, not life.
Life insurance is beautiful. It's vanilla. Practically all the risks are in nice neat tables." But Ketchum portrays a liability industry in which poor risks are being dumped like sour milk, in which safety sloppiness can mean not only aggravation from government bureaucrats but outrageous insurance premiums-or no policy at all -and in which big insurors feel pressed to shore up their oncemighty capital foundations this land of litigious customers and generous juries. "Do you know the phrase, 'the long tail?" President Harold S. Bigler said in an interview in his and Ketchum's temporary office in the Lawyers Building.
"It means the tremendous length of time- -maybe 50 years- after which a manufacturer, wholesaler, even a manufacturer's representative might be held liable for someone getting hurt by equipment, that could even have been modified several In' a simpler -but tougher on the victim -era, the maker of a product pretty well knew within the first three years all the damage claims it might stir up. Insurance costs were set accordingly. "Now a fellow might go 18 years without a loss-and not be sure he has a profit," says Ketchum. "As long as the attitude of the courts is that insurance is social instrument -we've got to do something for the poor guy who's been hurt -then, in effect, we have risks buried back in time that nobody can foresee." KETCHUM'S AND Bigler's business is insurance brokerage, eyeing the financial life-preserver on behalf of buyers rather than sellers, as an insur- Pittston Seeks Elgin Shares GREENWICH, Conn. Could it be, a reporter asked, that cause and effect have got turned upside down, that courts award giant damages, just because doctors or hospitals or product manufacturers are heavily insured? Might claims get smaller if a doctor, say, just refused to insure against malpractice? "You hear talk like that," said Ketchum, "but I don't think the medics really believe it. There are some dozen or so brokers working the Pittsburgh market, including branches of national firms, and one that K. and B. used to head, Babb Inc. They spearheaded that firm's growth to 100 employes and annual volume of $4 million, then suddenly were replaced as top officers last April in a reorganization which, from their point of view, justified meeting certain former coworkers in court. The matter remains in litigation, but Bigler and Ketchum said insurance brokerage excites them too much to stay out, even if they have to start over again, smaller.
They acquired the office space and client list of a national branch here, will move to permanent quarters in the Oliver Building May 1. Bigler pointed out that giant-sized companies tend to have their own insurance departments, many of them not unscathed in recent years, but the big expertise-gap is in moderate-sized enterprises of 25 to 500 employes, where the virtual revolutions in safety and environmental requirements and pension administration and foreign business risks have left executives with paperwork mountains and swimming heads. About a third of Bigler-Ketchum activity is in the employe benefit field, the rest in property and liability work. A BROKER'S STOCK in trade is showing management how to minimize risks (and premiums) by engineering improvements where feasible, helping determine how much financial exposure a firm can stand on its own as opposed to the portion insured, and helping place the insurance with carriers here or overseas. Chan Ketchum thinks more "captive insurance companies" are Market Action In Commodities CHICAGO SUMMARY Wheat- Mixed; late liquidation.
