The Courier-Journal from Louisville, Kentucky (2024)

1 COURIER JOURNAL, TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 1993 The director of the internationally acclaimed Ballard High School Concert Choir was charged yesterday with sodomizing a 15-year-old choir member. Perry Lester Puckett, 35, was arrested at his home at 1037 Wagner Ave. around 4:25 p.m. He was charged with third-degree sodomy, a felony, because the alleged victim, a boy, was under 16, said Sgt. Carl Yates, a Louisville police spokesman.

If convicted, Puckett could be sentenced to up to five years in prison. He was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to be arraigned in Jefferson District Court today. Yates said the Crimes Against Children Unit brought the charge after investigating confidential information it received Friday. Yates wouldn't say if the information came from the alleged victim or if the crime occurred while the choir was traveling for a performance. Yates did say the alleged offense occurred since November.

Under Puckett's four-year direction, the choir has continued its national and international success, winning top honors at the International Youth and Music Festival last year and in 1991. The Ballard choir also has made trips overseas. In 1992, Puckett was one of four Jefferson County teachers who received the Ashland Oil Teacher Achievement Award. The news of Puckett's arrest shocked many who knew him. Teachers and students described Puckett, who teaches music to nearly 300 students, as personable and well-liked.

"I'm speechless," said Ballard principal Sandy Allen. She said that to her knowledge, no student has previously made charges of this nature against Puckett. "It bothers me for him," she said. "He's a professional and very talented young man. We're going to wait and hear what the charges are." Judge denies request that Greene's trial be moved By TODD MURPHY Staff Writer LOUISVILLE NEWS School choir director charged with sodomy By CYNTHIA WILSON Staff Writer A Jefferson Circuit judge has denied at least for now a request from defense lawyers to move the sexual-harassment case against former Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Greene and two of his top deputies.

Lawyers for Greene and the former deputies had argued that publicity surrounding Greene and his office would make it impossible to find unbiased jurors in Jefferson County, Ky. Greene resigned last month after pleading, guilty to federal charges of tax evasion and mail fraud. His office had been under intense media scrutiny for years for a variety of controversies, including the sexualharassment lawsuit filed last June. In the lawsuit, five former and current female employees of the sheriff's office accuse Greene, former Deputy I Lou Byron and former sheriff's aide Ronnie Wall of sexual harassment. The lawsuit charges Byron only with making harassing remarks to one of the plaintiffs.

In arguing before Jefferson Circuit Judge Kenneth Conliffe that the trial should be moved, lawyers for Greene and his former deputies submitted copies of newspaper articles and videotapes of TV news broadcasts about the sheriff's office. A lawyer for one of the defendants also testified about a radio call-in show that was broadcast the night Greene pleaded guilty to the federal charges. The lawyer had indicated earlier that the show produced hundreds of callers who said, in effect, "they all wanted to lynch the sheriff." But in a written order yesterday, Conliffe said many of the news stories dealt with issues other than the sexual-harassment charges. Considering that, Conliffe wrote, along with "this court's experience that jurors take seriously their oath to decide the case based on what is actually presented to them in court," he denied the motion. But Conliffe's order also said that he could be forced to reconsider his ruling because of additional publicity before the trial or indications from potential jurors during jury selection that many are biased against the defendants.
